The Soloist concept was first conceived in 2000, when road racers were asking us if we could apply our aerodynamic skills to a road bike. Using the Smartwall tubeset to generate a good combination of torsional & bottom bracket stiffness at a reasonable weight, the first Soloist was very well received. But it may also have been slightly ahead of its time, so response was initially guarded.
Subsequent iterations of the Soloist refined the design to the point where in 2003, Team CSC decided to use them for their Spring campaign. The tubeset had by now been updated to Smartwall 2, with its curved, bulge-butted seattube for even better stiffness-to-weight ratio, specially butted & ovalized toptube, even sleeker downtube and the industry's most narrow integrated headtube. Only two years later the victory list is sheer endless and includes:
Liège-Bastogne-Liège
Paris-Nice (twice)
Critérium International (twice)
Tour de l'Avénir
Tour Méditerranéen (twice)
Tour de Qatar
Bayern Rundfahrt
Simply put, while the Soloist Team has the technical features, the ride quality and the pedigree to be a very expensive "super frame", it is in fact the least expensive way to ride the exact same frame the top pros ride. And if that isn't reason enough, it also morphs into a part-time TT/Tri bike for those who desire so, simply by using the Cervélo aero seatpost with flippable head.
